09 Feb Bariatric Surgery: Long term solution for weight loss
Answering the query regarding How metabolic surgery causes diabetes remission, Dr Amit Garg shared, “After Metabolic surgery, remission is observed in the days to weeks before any substantial weight loss has occurred. Metabolic surgery cures Type 2 diabetes by causing calorie restriction, hormonal changes such as reduced Ghrelin, increased GLP1 and peptide YY. These hormones stimulate beta cells in pancreas to stimulate increased secretion of insulin, provided enough beta cell mass is still present in pancreas. Persistent increased GLP-1 secretion increases beta cell mass in the long term. These gastro intestinal hormonal changes cause control of diabetes within few days of the surgery.”
“Increasing evidence shows that metabolic surgery can help reduce a person’s risk for a number of serious diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, arthritis and cancer,” notes Dr Amt Garg.
“Metabolic surgery” is an ideal approach aimed at treating diabetes. Diabetes remission is observed in few days after surgery before any substantial weight loss has occurred. Therefore, metabolic surgery is also useful in non-obese Type 2 diabetes patients. Loop Duodenojejunal bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy and proximal jejunal bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy are novel metabolic surgical procedure to treat diabetes.
